Harmonic cadence

A harmonic cadence is a kind of statement made through harmonic movement that occurs at the end of a phrase.

Kinds of cadences:

  • Perfect Authentic (PAC):
    • V - I or V7 - I
    • Both chords are in root position
  • Imperfect Authentic (IAC):
    • V - I or V7 - I
    • One or both chords are NOT in root position
  • Deceptive Cadence:
    • V - VIm or V7 - VIm
    • Called “deceptive” because V or V7 makes it seem as if we’re going to I
  • Half-Cadence:
    • Phrase ends on V
    • Called “half” because it’s half of an authentic cadence
  • Plagal:
    • IV - I
    • Called plagal because of its similarity to the “amen” sound
