Flute
The Western concert flute is an instrument of the woodwinds family. It is almost always made of metal in both classical and popular music. It does NOT have a reed.
It is a non-transposing instrument.
Range

Most flutes have the capability to play the low B notated above.
Timbre
From “Principles of Orchestration”:

(The underline bracket is the “scope of greatest expression”.)
From my own listening
- The low range of the flute reminds me more of the sound of a quenacho (see here)
- Many sources describe it as “dull” though I think of it as more “earthy”
- The higher range is tiring to listen to (similar to the piccolo)
- The middle range is pleasing
