Cadential progression

In harmony, a cadential progression is a progression that is meant to confirm a tonal center by utilizing harmonic functions in the following order[1]:

  1. Initial tonic
  2. Predominant
  3. Dominant
  4. Tonic

Different kinds of cadential progressions confirm a tonal center at different “strengths” (more convincingly). #🔖

Caplin (see [1]) claims that all cadential progressions must have dominant harmony in root position. This is contrary to what many are taught!
