Deceptive resolution
The standard, expected resolution of a V7 chord (be it diatonic or a secondary dominant) is to go to the I chord. However, to make things a bit spicier, we can avoid going there! Here’s the possibilities:
V7 -> VIm
I -> V7/VIm -> bIII
- e.g.
C E7 Eb - This is a usage of a tritone substitution
I -> V7b9/VIm -> IV
- e.g.
C E7b9 F - the b9 on III is the root of the IV
I -> V7b9/VIm -> IIm
- e.g.
C E7b9 Dm - the b9 on III is the b3 of the IIm
