Cadential progression
In harmony, a cadential progression is a progression that is meant to confirm a tonal center by utilizing harmonic functions in the following order1:
- Initial tonic
- Predominant
- Dominant
- Tonic
Different kinds of cadential progressions confirm a tonal center at different "strengths" (more convincingly).[citation needed]
Caplin (see 1) claims that all cadential progressions must have dominant harmony in root position. This is contrary to what many are taught!
