Jazz standard

A jazz standard is a composition that is commonly found in any jazz player’s repertoire. These compositions are also well-known by listeners, and have many recordings from various musicians.

There’s no definitive list of standards, though fake books tend to have many songs that would be considered a “standard”.

Not all standards are originally jazz compositions – many come from the Great American Songbook.
