Melodic inversion
Inversion is a motivic variation. The technique: invert all intervals such that each interval moves in the opposite direction. It looks as if the notes have been flipped upside down.
Diatonic inversion
Inversion by default uses the same interval numbers but not necessarily the same interval qualities.

Transposed inversion
A transposed inversion is simply a transposition and then an inversion after that.

Chromatic inversion
This approach strictly keeps the interval numbers and qualities, even if some of the notes fall out of the key.
