Lombard rhythm

A Lombard Rhythm, also known as a Scotch Snap or a Strathspey Rhythm, is a brief rhythmic pattern that consists of a 16th note followed by a dotted 8th note.

It is common in:

  • Traditional Scottish song and dance
  • Early English Baroque music
  • Hiphop (see Adam Neely’s video)
    • In hiphop, it’s really 2 dotted 16th notes
  • Lallans (the Scottish lowlands dialect)
