Repetitions of the basic idea
caplin-1998 writes that there are 3 main categories of repetitions of a basic idea:
- exact: the harmony repeats, and the melody retains its fundamental shape (though may be embellished)
- statement-response: the basic idea is the “tonic version” and the repetition is a “dominant version”
- sequential: both melody and harmony are transposed to a different scale degree
richards-2016 writes there are 4 ways to repeat the basic idea:
- exact
- statement-response
- sequential
- “alternating repetition”: the harmony for the basic idea can be split in half, and the first half of the 2nd basic idea is the same as the first half of the 1st basic idea but the second half differs
