Slash chord

A slash chord is when a chord is played but the root of the chord is not the bass note. This effectively comes in 2 flavours:

  1. The bass note is a chord tone
  2. The bass note is not a chord tone

Examples of 1:

  • C/E
  • D/A
  • G7/F
  • Many many chords from “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” by Elton John

Examples of 2:

  • C/A
  • G/A (this is used in the chorus of “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John)
